This 5.5km loop offers an engaging blend of industrial history and natural recovery, making it a favorite for Tunstall runners. Starting from James Brindley Way, the route transitions from paved roadside paths to the softer, undulating trails of Birchenwood Country Park. With a modest 31m of ascent, the "hilly" rating comes more from rhythmic rollers than steep climbs, providing just enough variety to keep your heart rate elevated. Runners will experience a mix of 50% paved surfaces and well-trodden paths, passing right over the historic Goldenhill Tunnel before looping back via Zodiac Drive for a fast finish.
Tunstall, one of the famous six towns of the Potteries, is steeped in heritage that this route puts front and center. The course navigates the grounds of the former Birchenwood Colliery and Coking plant—once a massive industrial hub—now beautifully reclaimed by nature as a country park. Running along the line of the Harecastle Tunnel system, you are literally moving above the engineering marvels that once powered the North Staffordshire economy. It’s a route where the echoes of the clay and coal industries meet the peaceful, green transition of modern Staffordshire, providing a scenic backdrop for your daily miles.
