Tackling The Wrekin Loop is a rite of passage for any Shropshire-based runner, offering a punchy 5.8km circuit that packs a significant 235m of ascent. Starting from the Wrekin car park, this clockwise loop takes you through the rugged woodland of Lawrence's Hill and across to Little Hill. As a Category SL (Small-Local) fell run, the terrain is entirely unpaved, consisting of forest tracks, rocky paths, and technical trails that demand focus and agility. While the climb is steep enough to get your lungs burning, the rewarding views across the Shropshire hills and the sense of isolation within the canopy make every meter of elevation worth the effort.
Little Wenlock and its towering neighbor, The Wrekin, are steeped in ancient history and local folklore. Characterized by its volcanic origin, the hill is famously associated with the legend of a giant named Gwillum who intended to flood the town of Shrewsbury. Beyond the myths, the area was a vital hillfort for the Cornovii tribe during the Iron Age. Running here today, you are traversing one of England's most iconic geological landmarks, which served as inspiration for J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth. It remains a cherished area of natural beauty where the transition from dense woodland to open ridges provides a constantly evolving backdrop for your training.
