This 4.4km loop through Hydon’s Ball and Heath offers a quintessential Surrey Hills trail running experience. Classified as a "hilly" Grade 3, you’ll tackle 85m of vertical gain, starting with a steady climb through lush woodland to the summit of Hydon’s Ball. The terrain is entirely off-road, featuring soft forest floors and technical trails that can get muddy in the winter months. Once you reach the peak—one of the highest points in the region—the path descends into open countryside, providing a fast and flowing section where you can pick up the pace while taking in views of the rolling fields. It’s a short but punchy effort that perfectly balances challenging climbs with scenic, runnable descents.
Steeped in local history, Hydon's Ball is more than just a waypoint on the Greensand Way; it serves as a memorial to Octavia Hill, one of the three founders of the National Trust. As you run past the stone seat at the summit, you are traversing land that was among the very first plots acquired by the Trust to preserve the English countryside. The surrounding village of Hambledon adds to the area's charm, known for its quiet lanes and traditional grit. Runners often find the mix of deep-rooted heritage and the "wild" feel of the heathland provides a refreshing escape from the nearby bustle of Godalming, making every mile feel like a journey back in time.
