This 7.2km loop through Thursley Common offers a quintessential English heathland running experience, characterized by its rolling terrain and unique sandy surfaces. Starting from either the Moat Pond or the Thursley Cricket Club, runners will tackle an undulating course with 46m of ascent that feels more challenging than the elevation profile suggests due to the soft, sandy paths. The terrain is entirely unpaved, making it an ideal off-road training ground, though be prepared for heavy going in dry spells and significant puddles during the wetter winter months. The circuit provides wide-open views and a sense of true wilderness just a stone’s throw from Elstead.
Thursley Common is not just a scenic backdrop; it is a vital National Nature Reserve and a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), representing one of the last remaining fragments of lowland heath in Britain. As you run, keep an eye out for rare bird species like the Dartford Warbler or the various dragonflies that frequent the boggy mires. The area holds deep historical significance, having served as a training ground for troops during both World Wars, and today it remains a protected haven for biodiversity. It’s a peaceful, atmospheric location where the sound of your footsteps on the grit is often the only noise you'll hear.
