Lace up your trail shoes for this refreshing 4.7km loop across the expansive Banstead Heath. Starting from the picturesque Mere Pond in Walton-on-the-Hill, this route offers a gentle introduction to off-road running with a modest 22m of ascent, making it an ideal choice for recovery runs or those looking to transition from pavement to turf. You’ll navigate a mix of sandy tracks and grassy paths as you skirt the perimeter of the prestigious Walton Heath Golf Club. The terrain is predominantly flat and fast, providing a sense of openness and freedom that is hard to find so close to London.
Banstead Heath is a site of Special Scientific Interest and one of the finest areas of common land in Surrey, steeped in history since the Domesday Book. As you run past the manicured fairways of the golf course—which has hosted the Ryder Cup and the British Master—keep an eye out for the vibrant purple heather and local skylarks. The start and end point at Mere Pond is a beloved local landmark where runners often gather; afterward, you can enjoy the village charm of Walton-on-the-Hill, which remains an equestrian and outdoor haven within the Borough of Reigate and Banstead.
