Starting from the Abinger Roughs car park, this 8.2km loop serves up a quintessential Surrey Hills trail experience that ranks as a "Solid 3" on the hilliness scale. You’ll begin with a sheltered, wooded warm-up through the ancient canopy of the Roughs before tackling a demanding 156m ascent that will certainly test your climbing legs. The reward is an exhilarating stretch across the crest of Hackhurst Down, featuring fast, undulating chalk grassland and expansive views across the Weald. As you join a segment of the historic North Downs Way, expect technical footwork on unpaved terrain that changes character with the seasons—from sun-baked hardpack in the summer to slick, muddy technical trails in the winter months.
Abinger is steeped in a quiet, rural majesty that makes it a favorite for local fell runners and hikers alike. These trails traverse some of the most ecologically significant chalk downland in Southeast England, managed by the National Trust to protect rare orchids and butterflies. As you navigate the northern section of the route, you are essentially retracing the steps of medieval pilgrims who once used these high ridges for safe passage through the county. The area’s historical charm is palpable, with nearby landmarks like the 11th-century St. James's Church and the famed Abinger Hatch pub providing the perfect backdrop for a post-run recovery in a village that feels like a time capsule of British countryside life.
