Experience the highest point in the South Downs on this scenic 7.8km loop starting from Haslemere. This route offers a fantastic mix of terrain, beginning with sheltered woody trails before opening up onto the sprawling, wide tracks of Black Down. With a moderate 103m of ascent, the climbing is gentle enough for a steady tempo but provides just enough of a "hilly" challenge to keep your heart rate up. Runners will enjoy the transition from soft, grassy trails into a smooth paved section along Tennyson’s Lane, where the path alongside the road provides a safe and picturesque finish to the run.
Black Down is steeped in literary history and natural beauty, most famously serving as the inspiration for Alfred, Lord Tennyson, who built his summer home, Aldworth, on these very slopes. As you navigate the heathland, you’re running through an area managed by the National Trust, known for its ancient sunken lanes and diverse wildlife. The views from the Temple of the Winds are legendary, offering a panoramic sweep across the Weald that has remained largely unchanged for centuries. It’s a quintessential English countryside run that perfectly captures the rugged yet accessible charm of near-border Surrey and West Sussex.
