Experience the tranquil charm of Guildford’s waterways on this 5.4km out-and-back trail. Starting near the vibrant Wild Wood Adventure, this route is a runner’s sanctuary, boasting an almost entirely flat profile with just 10m of ascent. You’ll swap the pavement for soft, riverside paths as you head out toward Bowers Lock. The terrain is unpaved, offering a more natural feel underfoot that is gentle on the joints, and the loop around the Riverside Nature Reserve ensures you get a fresh perspective of the marshland and local flora on your return leg. It’s an ideal choice for a recovery run or a steady-state session away from the noise of the town center.
The River Wey has a storied history, having been one of the first rivers in England to be made navigable back in the 17th century. As you run past the locks and through the Riverside Nature Reserve, you are following an ancient arterial route that once connected Guildford to the heart of London’s trade. Today, this corridor is a biodiversity hotspot; keep an eye out for kingfishers darting over the water or cattle grazing in the surrounding water meadows. This area manages to preserve a sense of rural Wiltshire isolation despite being just a short jog from the bustling cobblestones of Guildford High Street, making it a favorite "hidden gem" for local Surrey running clubs.
