This 7.9km loop through Epsom Common offers a tranquil escape into one of Surrey’s most beautiful nature reserves. Starting from West Hill Park, runners will navigate an entirely off-road course that winds anticlockwise through the ancient oak woodlands of Newton Wood and the open expanses of Horton Heath. With only 32 meters of ascent, the terrain is remarkably flat, making it an ideal choice for a sustained tempo run or an easy recovery session. You'll traverse a variety of trail surfaces, passing the historic Stew Ponds and skirting the edge of Ashtead Common before a scenic return leg along The Rye walk and through the lush Rye Meadow.
Epsom Common is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), and its history is as rich as its biodiversity. The Stew Ponds you'll pass were originally created in the medieval period by monks from Chertsey Abbey to provide a reliable source of fish. Today, the area is a haven for local runners and wildlife enthusiasts alike, famous for its rare butterfly species and grazing cattle. Located within the borough of Epsom and Ewell, this route sits just a stone's throw from the site where "Epsom Salts" were first discovered in the 17th century, though today the Common is better known as the ultimate green lung for the local community.
