This 12.2km out-and-back route offers a pancake-flat running experience along the historic Caldon Canal, stretching from Hanley’s Northwood district out to the charming village of Stockton Brook. Runners can expect a peaceful, traffic-free corridor characterized by well-maintained towpaths and scenic waterway views. With zero meters of ascent, it is an ideal training ground for speed sessions, tempo runs, or those looking to bank a solid 7.5 miles without the challenge of the Staffordshire hills. The route transitions beautifully from the industrial heritage of the Potteries into the lush, green fringes of the city, providing a refreshed perspective of Stoke-on-Trent's natural landscape.
The Caldon Canal is widely considered one of the most interesting waterways in England, originally opened in 1777 to transport limestone from Froghall to the Grand Trunk Canal. Running this stretch from Primes Bridge takes you past reminders of the area's industrial prowess, through what local runners affectionately call the "green lung" of the city. As you reach Stockton Brook, you’ll encounter the impressive flight of locks, a testament to 18th-century engineering. The area is steeped in local history, once serving as the lifeblood for the world-famous pottery industry, but today it serves as a tranquil sanctuary for local wildlife, including kingfishers and herons, which you’ll likely spot as you clock your miles.
