Starting from the greenery of Bucknall Grange Park, this 7.1km loop offers a fantastic blend of suburban paths and rugged common land. The course is a true hybrid, with a 50/50 split between paved surfaces and natural trails, making it ideal for runners looking to transition from the road to more varied terrain. With 114m of ascent, you'll feel the burn on a few notable inclines—rated a level 3 for hilliness—especially as you climb toward the expansive views of Wetley Moor. The route takes you through the quiet fringes of Brookhouse Wood before opening up into the wilder, heathland stretches that provide a refreshing "breath of fresh air" away from the city bustle.
Abbey Hulton and the surrounding Wetley Moor carry deep roots in Staffordshire’s rural history. Wetley Moor itself is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), recognized for its rare lowland heath habitat which feels remarkably untouched by the surrounding urban development. As you pass through Abbey Hulton, you are running near the site of the former Hulton Abbey, a 13th-century Cistercian monastery that once dominated this landscape. This mix of ancient common land and local heritage gives the run a unique sense of place, offering local runners a scenic escape that feels much further from Stoke-on-Trent than it actually is.
