Route Overview & Local Insights

Experience the best of Hampshire’s varied terrain on this 7.1km loop through the northern fringes of Southampton. This route offers a balanced mix of 50% paved surfaces and undulating woodland trails, making it an ideal choice for runners looking to escape the pavement without heading deep into the New Forest. You’ll navigate a steady 59m of ascent as you cut through the lush fairways of the Municipal Golf Course and head into the dense canopy of Lord’s Wood. While the paths are well-defined, the unpaved sections through Chilworth Common are notoriously muddy after rain, so opt for trail shoes if it’s been a damp week to maintain traction on the climbs.

The area around Chilworth and Lord’s Wood is steeped in local history, most notably evidenced by the stretch of the ancient Roman Road you’ll encounter. This straight, tree-lined path once connected the Roman settlement of Clausentum (Bitterne) to the regional capital at Venta Belgarum (Winchester). Running along this historic corridor provides a unique sense of perspective, perfectly complemented by the serene, natural beauty of the local heathland. It is a favorite spot for Southampton's running community, offering a quiet, green lung just a stone's throw from the bustling Sports Centre and University of Southampton Science Park.
