This 5.0km loop offers a refreshing blend of Sheffield's famous greenery and historic architecture, taking you through the heart of the Gleadless Valley and Beauchief. With a moderate 87m of ascent, the route features a mix of paved sections and woodland trails that provide a "hilly" but rewarding challenge. Starting at Nether Wood, you'll join the well-marked Sheffield Round Walk, enjoying a steady climb before descending towards the serene grounds of Beauchief Abbey. The mix of terrain makes it an excellent choice for local runners looking for a suburban escape that feels much further from the city center than it actually is.
Steeped in local history, the centerpiece of this run is Beauchief Abbey, a former Premonstratensian monastery founded in 1175. As you crest the hill on Beauchief Abbey Lane, you'll be running past one of the few remaining fragments of Sheffield's medieval past, now serving as a peaceful parish church surrounded by ancient woodland and manicured golf greens. This area was once the heart of a vast estate, and the mature oaks of Nether Wood still hint at the ancient "Great Park" that once dominated this landscape. It is a quintessential Sheffield experience, where the industrial "Steel City" fades into a backdrop of rolling hills and monastic heritage.
