Experience the serene beauty of the Peak District’s northeastern edge with this 5.7km loop around Langsett Reservoir. This route offers a moderate challenge for Barnsley runners, featuring a total ascent of 107m that provides just enough elevation to keep things interesting without being overwhelming. The terrain is fully paved, making it an excellent choice for a steady tempo run or a reliable winter outing when other trails might be muddy. You can expect a consistent surface underfoot as you navigate the gentle undulations that hug the shoreline, offering glorious waterfront views and a refreshing breeze off the water.
Langsett is steeped in both natural beauty and local history, gritstone having been quarried here for centuries to build the surrounding dry-stone walls and the reservoir dam itself. As you run through the swathes of coniferous woodland and open moorland fringes, you are traversing an area that served as a vital training ground for infantry tanks during World War II. Today, the atmosphere is far more peaceful, starting and ending near the historic Langsett Barn. After your session, the local tradition is to refuel at one of the nearby gritstone pubs or the famous Wagon & Horses, making this a favorite weekend destination for the South Yorkshire running community.
