Looking for a punchy coastal trail that delivers both burn and beauty? This 5.2km loop starting from Quay Street in West Somerset is a local favorite for its "short but sharp" profile. The route kicks off on the iconic South West Coast Path, where you'll tackle approximately 189m of vertical gain. The terrain is a varied mix of around 30% paved surface and rugged coastal trails. You'll work your way up steep accents that grade a 4 on the hilliness scale, but the effort is rewarded with sweeping views over the Bristol Channel. After the coastal stretch, the path dives into lush, sheltered woodland before transitioning onto Greenaleigh Upper Road for a fast, gravity-assisted descent back toward the harbor.
West Somerset is a gateway to the Exmoor National Park, and this particular loop provides a micro-adventure through its unique geological history. The area around Greenaleigh is steeped in maritime heritage; as you run along the cliffs, you’re traversing an area once frequented by smugglers and lighthouse keepers. This stretch of the coastline is famous for having one of the highest tidal ranges in the world, often revealing hidden rock pools and dramatic foreshores below the trail. Starting and finishing near the historic Minehead harbor, you'll feel the transition from a bustling seaside town to the raw, untamed wilderness of the Somerset "Hills by the Sea" in just a few kilometers.
