This 8.7km lollipop loop offers a fantastic blend of Somerset levels and a rewarding climb up the iconic Brent Knoll. Starting from Middle Burnham, you’ll enjoy about 30% paved surfaces before transitioning onto more rugged, hilly trails as you ascend the "Knoll." With 109 meters of elevation gain, it’s a moderately challenging run that keeps you on your toes. The highlight is undoubtedly the section around Giles's Copse, where the terrain becomes technical enough to satisfy trail enthusiasts while providing breathtaking panoramic views across the Bristol Channel and the Mendip Hills.
Brent Knoll is steeped in local history, once known as the "Mount of Frogs" and serving as an Iron Age hill fort. As you run through this landscape in Sedgemoor, you're traversing a site that has been a strategic landmark for centuries. The surrounding Somerset Levels are famous for their unique drainage systems and pastoral beauty, providing a stark, flat contrast to the sudden limestone outcrop of the Knoll itself. Keep an eye out for diverse birdlife and the shifting Somerset light that makes this particular route a favorite for local photography and morning training sessions.
