Experience a diverse 9.5km loop that perfectly captures the dramatic geography of the Somerset landscape. Starting in the village of Draycott, you’ll enjoy a relatively flat, fast warm-up across the moors before tackling the sharp, technical ascent of Nyland Hill. This "island" in the Somerset Levels offers panoramic 360-degree views of the surrounding flatlands. After descending Nyland, the route transitions into a more traditional Mendip challenge, with a steady climb to join the West Mendip Way. With 271m of total ascent and a mix of paved lanes and rugged trails, it’s a category AL run that rewards your effort with a thrilling, rapid descent back toward the start.
Nyland Hill, also known as Andredessey in ancient times, is steeped in historical significance, once serving as an ecclesiastical outpost for Glastonbury Abbey. As you run through this area, you are crossing what was once a marshy seabed, with Nyland Hill standing out as a prominent landmark for medieval travelers. The Mendip Hills AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) is famous for its limestone karst scenery and ancient hillforts; running the West Mendip Way section of this route puts you on one of the most iconic long-distance paths in Southwest England, where the limestone grasslands provide a unique habitat for rare wildflowers and butterflies.
