Tackle a classic Somerset challenge with this 12.0km anticlockwise loop through the heart of the Quantock Hills. Starting from the Holford car park, you’ll enjoy a brief warm-up on relatively level ground before the real work begins: a sustained 174-meter climb that tests your lungs as you push toward the summit of Beacon Hill. This route is predominantly off-road trail, featuring a mix of rugged paths and grassy tracks. Once you reach the ridge, the hard work pays off with a glorious, undulating stretch that offers expansive views across the Bristol Channel and toward Wales, followed by a sweeping descent back into the village of Holford.
Holford is a gateway to England’s first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a landscape that famously inspired the Romantic poets Wordsworth and Coleridge during their residency at Alfoxton House. As you run through these ancient oak woodlands and over the purple-clad heathlands, you’re traversing a region steeped in literary history and Bronze Age archaeology. Keep an eye out for the local Quantock ponies often found grazing near the summit. Whether you are training for a hilly trail race or searching for a scenic weekend long run, this route captures the wild, dramatic spirit of West Somerset in a tidy 12-kilometer package.
