Tackle a classic Shropshire challenge with this 4.2km loop through the Earls Hill Nature Reserve. Despite the modest distance, this route packs a punch with 176m of vertical gain, making it a favorite for local fell runners looking to build leg strength. Starting from the Pontesford Hill car park, you’ll navigate technical, unpaved singletrack and steep gradients as you summit both Earls Hill and Pontesford Hill. The terrain is purely off-road, offering a mix of grassy ridgelines and woodland trails that rewards your climbing efforts with breathtaking 360-degree views across the Shropshire hills and toward the Welsh border.
Beyond the physical test, this area is steeped in ancient history and ecological significance. Earls Hill was the site of an Iron Age hillfort, and as you catch your breath at the summit, you’re standing where inhabitants looked out over the landscape over 2,000 years ago. Managed by the Shropshire Wildlife Trust, the site is a haven for peregrine falcons and rare plants that cling to the volcanic rock outcrops. It’s a quintessential piece of the local landscape that feels much more wild and remote than its proximity to Pontesbury suggests, offering a rugged escape for any trail runner.
