This 5.2km loop offers a quintessential Shropshire running experience, trading pavement for the soft, rewarding textures of woodland trails and bridleways. Setting off from the historic town of Much Wenlock, you’ll tackle a moderately hilly profile with 63m of ascent, making it an ideal session for runners looking to build strength without the exhaustion of a monster climb. The route winds clockwise around Stretton Westwood, providing plenty of natural shelter and dappled light, perfect for finding your rhythm away from the wind. Expect varied terrain that keeps you on your toes—firm underfoot in summer but traditionally "Shropshire-soft" after a bit of rain.
Runners will find themselves immersed in the birthplace of the modern Olympic Games; it was right here in Much Wenlock that Dr. William Penny Brookes inspired the global sporting movement. As you pass through the outskirts of the town and circle the limestone edges of the Wenlock Edge area, you are running over ancient tropical seabed, now transformed into lush woodland and rolling hills. Local tip: after your run, head back into the town square to explore the timber-framed buildings and refuel at one of the local bakeries—the medieval atmosphere provides a fantastic cooldown backdrop for any athlete.
