Experience the rugged beauty of the Shropshire Hills on this 8.3km loop through Church Stretton. This route offers a quintessential fell running experience, ascending from the popular Carding Mill Valley via the stony, steady climb of Dr Mott’s Road to a peak elevation of 480m. Runners will navigate a mix of technical stony tracks and sweeping grassy trails that provide a soft landing as you descend into the picturesque Batch Valley. With over 300m of climbing, it is a challenging "Short Local" (SL) course that rewards your effort with breathtaking panoramic views of the Long Mynd before a fast, technical link back to the start.
Known affectionately as "Little Switzerland" during the Victorian era, Church Stretton is steeped in geological and pastoral history. As you run through Carding Mill Valley, you are retracing the steps of 13th-century walkers who used the stream to power local corn and textile mills. The area is now managed by the National Trust and serves as a gateway to some of the oldest rock formations in England. Be sure to keep an eye out for the wild Long Mynd ponies that often graze near the summit, and remember that while the trails are beautiful, the Shropshire weather is notoriously fickle—always carry a light windshell, even if the sun is out when you leave the car park.
This course has sections close to or above 500m. Weather conditions can change at short notice, so plan accordingly.
