This 11.3km circuit offers a quintessential Shropshire Hills running experience, blending steady climbs with fast, flowing descents. Starting from Church Stretton, you’ll tackle a 320m ascent that rewards you with technical but manageable grassy trails and roughly 40% paved sections for a bit of rhythmic recovery. The definitive highlight is the traverse across the spine of Hope Bowlder Hill; on a clear day, runners are treated to panoramic views of the Long Mynd and the Caradoc. It’s a moderately challenging route that calls for trail shoes with good grip, especially after rain when the steep northern slopes can become slick.
Church Stretton, often affectionately called "Little Switzerland" due to its dramatic valley setting and alpine feel, has been a magnet for outdoor enthusiasts since the Victorian era. As you loop toward the quiet village of Cardington, you are running through a landscape steeped in ancient history, passing near the Iron Age hillfort of Caer Caradoc. This area is part of the Shropshire Hills National Landscape, where the unique geology creates a varied terrain that is perfect for hill repeats or long, soul-soothing mountain runs. After finishing your loop, local runners recommend heading into the town center for a post-run refuel at one of the independent cafes that line the historic streets.
