This 5.9km coastal loop offers a refreshing blend of residential Cleveland and dramatic North Sea vistas. Starting near Saltburn, you’ll head out through the quiet, leafy outskirts of Hazel Grove towards Marske-by-the-Sea. The terrain is largely paved and approachable, but with 44m of ascent, it packs just enough punch to keep your heart rate up. The highlight is undoubtedly the return leg along the coastal path, where you’ll trade the pavement for sweeping sea views before tackling the signature flight of steps up to Marine Parade. It’s a perfect route for runners looking for a moderate challenge with high visual rewards.
The area between Saltburn and Marske is steeped in Victorian seaside charm and industrial heritage. Saltburn-by-the-Sea was developed into a resort by the Pease family in the 1860s, and you’ll feel that history as you sprint toward the finish along Marine Parade, which sits high above the world’s oldest water-balanced cliff lift. Marske-by-the-Sea provides a quieter, more traditional backdrop to your journey, once serving as an important hub for local miners. As you navigate the coastal paths, keep an eye out for the surfers catching waves below Saltburn’s iconic pier—a true staple of the North East's active outdoor culture.
