This 7.9km scenic loop offers a refreshing blend of challenges for trail enthusiasts and road runners alike, featuring a notable 173m of vertical gain. Starting from the Flatts Lane Woodland Country Park, the route transitions from the steady, paved sections near Lackenby into the more rugged, undulating terrain of Eston Moor. Expect a mixed-surface experience that tests your climbing legs through Claphams Wood, where the "hilly" rating of 3 truly comes into play. The loop provides plenty of visual rewards, with expansive views across the Tees Valley and the North Sea coastline as you reach the higher elevations of the moor.
Steeped in industrial heritage, the ground beneath your feet at Eston Moor was once the beating heart of the British steel industry. As you run past the sandstone outcrops and through the dense woodland, you are traversing the site where ironstone was first discovered in the mid-19th century, sparking the rapid growth of nearby Middlesbrough. Today, the area has been reclaimed by nature, serving as a sanctuary for local wildlife and a favorite training ground for Teesside’s running community. Keep an eye out for the historic Eston Nab, a landmark that has watched over this landscape since the Bronze Age.
