Push your limits on this 11.0km circuit that strikes the perfect balance between technical trail running and steady paved sections. Starting from the edge of Guisborough at Ilkley Grove, you’ll navigate a moderate 314m of ascent as you climb toward the jagged silhouette of Roseberry Topping. The terrain is wonderfully varied; about 20% of the route is paved, providing some respite before hitting the hilly segments that define the North York Moors. Expect a challenging ascent via Hutton Village, followed by a rewarding ridge run across Hutton Moor and Highcliffe, where the panoramic views of the Cleveland Plain make every lung-busting step worthwhile.
Often referred to as the "Matterhorn of Yorkshire" due to its distinctive half-conical shape, Roseberry Topping is a geological marvel steeped in local lore. The summit’s unique profile was actually exacerbated by a geological fault combined with an extensive alum and ironstone mining history, leading to a massive landslip in 1912. As you run through the ancient woodlands of Hutton Village and across the heather-clad Highcliffe, you’re traversing an area that has inspired everyone from Captain Cook—who explored these hills as a boy—to modern endurance athletes. It is an iconic North Yorkshire landmark that offers a rugged, high-alpine feel just a stone's throw from the historic market town of Guisborough.
