This flat, 5.1km out-and-back route along the Southsea Esplanade offers one of the most refreshing running experiences on the South Coast. Entirely paved and following the famous Solent Way, the path stretches from Clarence Esplanade out toward Eastney and back, providing runners with unobstructed views of the Solent. With zero elevation gain, it is a perfect choice for speed sessions, a recovery jog, or a PB attempt. Expect a bracing sea breeze and a wide, pedestrian-friendly promenade that accommodates runners of all abilities, from casual weekend joggers to those training for the local Great South Run.
Portsmouth’s coastline is steeped in maritime heritage, and this run takes you right through the heart of it. As you navigate the coastline, you’ll pass local landmarks like the historic Southsea Castle, where Henry VIII famously watched his flagship, the Mary Rose, sink in 1545. Looking out over the water, you can spot the Isle of Wight on the horizon and watch the constant activity of ferries and naval vessels entering the harbor. The area has a vibrant pier culture and well-maintained Victorian gardens, making it a favorite spot for the local running community to gather and enjoy the unique coastal atmosphere of "Portsmouth’s Front."
