Route Overview & Local Insights

The Henley River 5 is a pristine 5km out-and-back route that offers runners a pancake-flat experience along the shimmering banks of the Thames. Starting in the heart of Henley-on-Thames, the course takes you south toward Shiplake on a mixture of paved towpaths and well-trodden river trails. With zero meters of ascent, this is an ideal PB-chaser or a recovery run where you can lock into a steady rhythm while watching the rowers glide past. The terrain is roughly 45% paved, making it versatile for road shoes or light hybrids, especially during the drier months when the riverside sections are firm underfoot.

Runners will find themselves immersed in the deep sporting heritage of South Oxfordshire, a region synonymous with the world-famous Henley Royal Regatta. As you navigate the Thames Path, you’ll pass iconic boat houses and meadows that have hosted elite athletes since 1839. This stretch of the river is steeped in local history, once serving as a vital trade artery between Oxford and London. After finishing your run, the town’s medieval streets offer plenty of independent coffee shops to refuel, making this route a quintessential English running experience.
