This 16.3km loop offers a revitalizing escape from Oxford’s city center, blending urban waterways with serene countryside. Starting along the historic Oxford Canal, the route transitions into a flat, flowing stretch of the Thames Path, leading you toward the lush greenery of Wytham Great Wood. With a negligible 17m of total ascent, this is a prime route for runners looking to maintain a steady tempo or log a long, low-impact base run. Expect a mixed terrain of paved paths and grassy riverside trails; however, be mindful that the Thames floodplains can get quite boggy during the winter months, so choose your footwear accordingly.
Beyond the physical challenge, this route journeys through the heart of Oxfordshire’s ecological and academic history. Wytham Woods, which borders the turn-around point, has been owned by the University of Oxford since 1942 and remains one of the most researched pieces of woodland in the world. As you navigate the fields near the A34 underpass and rejoin the river, you’ll be sharing the path with local rowing coaches and traditional narrowboats. The area is a haven for local wildlife, and it’s not uncommon to spot kingfishers darting across the water or grey herons standing sentinel on the banks as you make your way back toward the dreaming spires.
