The Thames & Heath Trail Loop is an exceptional 30.4km long-distance challenge that perfectly captures the diverse landscape of Oxford and its southern outskirts. Starting with a fast, flat section along the iconic Thames Path toward Abingdon, runners can settle into a steady rhythm on well-trodden riverbank trails. As you leave the water behind near Radley, the terrain shifts into a more varied "SL" (Standard Loop) profiles, characterized by undulating country lanes, forest tracks, and open footpaths. With roughly 50% paved surfaces, it offers a great balance for road runners transitioning to trails, though the sections through Wootton Heath and Pickets Heath can become quite rugged and muddy during the English winter, requiring steady footwork and reliable trail shoes.
Beyond the physical test, this route is a journey through Oxfordshire’s rich heritage and natural beauty. Running along the Thames provides a front-row seat to the historic rowing culture of the University city, while the loop through the Oxford Green Belt offers a rare sense of isolation just miles from the dreaming spires. The passage near Thrupp Lake is a highlight for nature lovers, often teeming with local birdlife, and the final stretch through North Hinksey carries you through a village that has inspired poets and scholars for centuries. This route is a local favorite for marathon training or long weekend runs, offering enough variety in scenery and surface to keep even the most seasoned ultramarathoner engaged.
