This 8.4km loop offers a refreshing escape from the bustle of central Oxford, taking runners onto the expansive, historic flats of Port Meadow. Starting at Roger Dudman Way Bridge, you'll follow a completely flat, paved course that traces the peaceful Thames Path toward Godstow. The terrain is a runner’s dream for speed work or a steady-state tempo run, with zero ascent to break your rhythm. As you cross the river at Godstow Road and loop back toward Medley Bridge, you’ll experience wide-open horizons and river views that feel miles away from the university spires. Just be mindful of the seasonal elements; while the paved path is reliable, the meadow is a natural floodplain, and you may find yourself running alongside the resident ponies and cattle that call this ancient grazing land home.
Port Meadow is one of the oldest archaeological sites in Oxford, having remained unploughed for over 4,000 years. Legend has it that the Freemen of Oxford were granted the right to graze cattle here by Alfred the Great in the 10th century—a right they still exercise today. As you approach the northern turn of the route, you'll pass near the ruins of Godstow Abbey, once the burial site of Rosamund Clifford, the "Fair Rosamund" and mistress of Henry II. This area was also a favorite haunt of Lewis Carroll, who often rowed along this stretch of the Thames while spinning the tales that would eventually become Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Running here isn't just a workout; it's a stride through centuries of English history and literary inspiration.
