Route Overview & Local Insights

Experience the tranquil charm of Nottinghamshire on this 7.1km loop that strikes a perfect balance between gentle exercise and forest immersion. Starting from Sookholme Lane, this route is exceptionally runner-friendly with a predominantly flat profile and an ascent of just 21 meters, making it an ideal choice for a recovery run or a steady tempo session. You will navigate through the quiet village of Warsop Vale before entering the lush canopy of Warsop Wood. The terrain is notably paved for a large portion, ensuring reliable footing even after a typical British rain shower, and finishes with a scenic stretch through the "Hills and Holes" area, providing a visually engaging end to your journey.

This area of North Nottinghamshire is steeped in coal mining heritage, and running through Warsop Vale offers a glimpse into the industrial history that once defined these communities. The "Hills and Holes" section is a particular local highlight; it is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) formed from ancient limestone quarrying, now reclaimed by nature to provide a unique undulating landscape of rare grasses and wildflowers. As you traverse the outskirts of Warsop Wood, you are running through a landscape that once formed the northern fringes of the legendary Sherwood Forest, offering a peaceful escape where the only distractions are the local birdlife and the rustle of the oak trees.
