This 6.0km circuit offers a refreshingly flat and accessible escape through the heart of Nottinghamshire’s countryside. Starting in New Ollerton, the route transitions seamlessly from paved sections to well-maintained riverside paths along the River Maun. With only 22 meters of total ascent, this is an ideal "speed work" loop or a steady recovery run where you can maintain a consistent cadence. The second half of the journey winds through the cooling canopy of Broughton Brake, providing a soft natural surface that is gentle on the joints before circling back into town.
The River Maun has long been the lifeblood of this region, once powering the watermills of the Sherwood Forest area. As you run through Broughton Brake, you are traversing land that sits on the edge of the historic Birklands, a fragment of the ancient royal hunting forest. Local runners often favor this route during the autumn months when the woodland colors are at their peak and the river banks are teeming with local birdlife. It’s a perfect slice of Newark and Sherwood scenery that feels miles away from the hustle of the nearby A614.
