This 6.1km loop offers a quintessential Northumbrian trail experience, starting from Blaeberry Hill and climbing into the rugged beauty of the Coquet Valley. With 115m of ascent, the route is moderately hilly but rewards your effort with breathtaking views as you navigate the clockwise circuit around the striking sandstone formations of Ship Crag. The terrain is entirely unpaved, consisting of technical footpaths and natural tracks that wind under the dramatic northern face of Crocky’s Heugh. Runners should be prepared for a mix of heather-lined singletrack and rocky sections that require nimble footwork and a good pair of trail shoes.
Rothbury, often referred to as the "Capital of Coquetdale," is steeped in history and serves as a gateway to the Northumberland National Park. The crags you’ll pass, such as Ship Crag, are part of the Simonside Hills’ lower reaches and have been landmarks for travelers and locals for centuries. This area is famous for its "Lordenshaw" ancient rock carvings and Iron Age hillforts, giving your run a sense of traveling through deep time. After finishing your loop, the traditional stone architecture of Rothbury village provides the perfect backdrop for a post-run recovery coffee by the River Coquet.
