Experience the rugged beauty of Northumberland National Park on this 7.0km lollipoop-style circuit through the Simonside Hills. This route is a true test of versatility, kicking off with a demanding climb from the forest car park before transitioning into faster, wide gravel tracks. The highlight for most runners is the atmospheric ascent up the Simonside ridge itself; while the elevation gain of 197m packs a punch, much of the technical climbing is managed via a well-maintained flagstone path. This paved surface provides reliable footing as you traverse the exposed crags, offering breathtaking panoramic views across the Coquet Valley and towards the Cheviot Hills, making every meter of effort well worth the burn.
Steeped in ancient mystery, the Simonside Hills are far more than just a scenic backdrop for a morning run. The area is renowned for its prehistoric rock art and Iron Age hillforts, and local folklore even speaks of the "Simonside Dwarfs," mythical creatures said to lure late-night travelers into the bogs. Today, the ridge is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), home to a thrive population of red grouse and iconic heather moorland. Given its popularity and proximity to the village of Rothbury, the trails can get busy on weekends, so early morning starts are recommended to enjoy the solitude of this ancient landscape while the Northumbrian mist still clings to the sandstone outcrops.
