This 9.6km loop offers a quintessential Northumberland National Park running experience, blending steady climbs with fast, technical descents. Starting from the Bendor Crossing area near Wooler Common, you'll tackle a 245m vertical gain that peaks at the summit of Humbleton Hill. The terrain is a varied mix of roughly 40% paved tracks and rugged upland moorland paths. Runners should prepare for a significant initial ascent, but the reward is a sweeping section of the legendary St Cuthbert's Way and a high-cadence finish along a firm concrete track that allows you to really stretch your legs on the descent back to the start.
Steeped in Iron Age and medieval history, Humbleton Hill (historically Homildon Hill) was the site of a famous 1402 battle between the English and the Scots. As you navigate the trails, you can still see the remnants of the ancient hillfort ramparts carved into the landscape. The route follows a portion of the St Cuthbert's Way, a long-distance trail inspired by the 7th-century monk, offering panoramic views across the Glendale Valley toward the Cheviot Hills. It is a spectacular location where the wildness of the Cheviots meets the historical depth of the Anglo-Scottish borders.
