This 21.1km point-to-point journey from Byrness to Kielder offers a quintessential Northumbrian trail experience, perfect for runners seeking a "wild" half marathon distance. The route follows the Forest Drive, a high-altitude gravel track that cuts through one of the largest planted forests in Europe. With 293m of ascent spread across undulating hills, you’ll encounter a consistent, compact gravel surface that rewards a steady cadence. It is a remote and exposed run; you’ll trade city noise for the rhythmic crunch of stone and the occasional sight of a soaring bird of prey. The terrain is unrelenting but manageable for those prepared for the isolation of the upland forest.
Steeped in border history, the area surrounding Byrness and Kielder was once the domain of the Border Reivers, a lawless land of feuds and "Bastle" houses. Today, it forms part of the Northumberland International Dark Sky Park, known for having some of the lowest light pollution levels in England. As you traverse the ridge between the two villages, you are running through a landscape that has transitioned from ancient hunting grounds to a vital timber resource and a haven for rare red squirrels. Arriving into Kielder, you leave the expansive, wind-swept heights for the sheltered greenery of the Water, marking the completion of a truly rugged North Country crossing.
