The Alnmouth Loop is a punchy 3.1km circuit that perfectly captures the dramatic beauty of the Northumberland coast in a short, accessible distance. Starting with a flat, rhythmic stretch along the banks of the River Aln, runners can find their stride before tackling a moderate elevation gain of 22 meters as the route weaves through the village. The terrain is a balanced mix of roughly 40% paved roads and coastal paths, offering a varied feel underfoot. As you transition from the village streets to the coastal path, you'll be rewarded with expansive views of the North Sea and the rugged shoreline, followed by a refreshing descent back towards the village centre that makes this short loop feel like a true adventure.
Alnmouth itself is a village steeped in history, once a significant grain port before a violent storm in 1806 diverted the course of the river and changed the local landscape forever. Today, it is famous for its "painted" houses and its status as one of the most picturesque spots on the Northumberland Coast Path. Running here connects you to an ancient seafaring past, passing near the site of the old Mortitium (St Waleric's Church) on Church Hill—now separated from the village by the river's shift. Whether you are navigating the steady incline through the village or catching the salt spray on the gravel sections, the Alnmouth Loop offers a snapshot of England’s most stunning heritage coastline.
