Route Overview & Local Insights

The Ripon Heritage Loop is a standout 9.1km circuit that perfectly captures the varied North Yorkshire landscape. Striking a balance between paved roads and undulating trails, the route gains a manageable 48m in elevation, making it an ideal choice for runners looking for a steady "steady state" effort or a scenic weekend miles session. You’ll head west from Bishopton, tackling a gentle climb past Dick Hill and onto Studley Moor. The terrain keeps you engaged—expect firm tracks, some potentially muddy trail sections after rain, and wide-open sky views that make the 9km fly by. The descent through the shaded paths near Studley Roger provides a fast, flowing finish to this accessible semi-urban adventure.

Running through this area is like moving through a living history book. Ripon itself is one of England’s oldest cities, and this loop takes you to the very edge of the Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Water Garden, a UNESCO World Heritage site. As you traverse Studley Deer Park, keep an eye out for the resident Red, Fallow, and Sika deer that have roamed these grounds for centuries. The surrounding countryside has remained largely unchanged since the 18th century, offering a tranquil escape where the only "traffic" you might encounter is a curious herd of deer or fellow local runners enjoying the vistas of the iconic Ripon Cathedral on the horizon.
