Starting from the charming village of Gunnerside, this 8.3km loop offers a quintessential Yorkshire Dales experience, blending rugged pasture trails with steady climbs. The route begins with a brief paved section before challenging your lungs with a steep ascent through lush farm fields. As you climb toward the remote settlement of Winterings, the gradient levels off, rewarding you with panoramic views of Swaledale. With 246m of ascent and a "hilly" rating of 4, it’s a fantastic workout for those looking to build strength on varied terrain, eventually descending into a fast, flowing valley path that traces the river back to your starting point.
Richmondshire is steeped in lead mining history, and as you run through the Winterings pastures, you are passing through a landscape once shaped by the industrial grit of the 18th and 19th centuries. Gunnerside itself was a hub for miners, and the surrounding gills still bear the scars of old hushings and levels. Today, the area is much quieter, known for its iconic dry-stone walls and "laithe" houses (traditional field barns). After finishing your run, we highly recommend stopping by the local Smithy or the Kings Head pub to refuel—this area is as famous for its warm hospitality as it is for its challenging North Yorkshire accents and inclines.
