This 7.6km loop offers a quintessential North York Moors running experience, blending fast, flat sections with a challenging valley climb. Starting on the historic dismantled railway line at Rosedale Head, you’ll enjoy a mirror-flat opening that allows for a rhythmic pace while soaking in sweeping panoramic views of the dale. The terrain is entirely unpaved, consisting of rugged moorland tracks and lower valley paths. After descending from the high ridges to the lush valley floor, runners face a significant 164m ascent to return to the start. Rated as moderately hilly, this route rewards the effort with technical trail segments and a true sense of isolation in the heart of North Yorkshire.
Rosedale West Side is steeped in industrial heritage, though today it feels like a silent wilderness. The broad, level path you’ll run along at the start was once part of the Rosedale Railway, built in the 1860s to transport iron ore from the local mines to the furnaces of Teesside. As you descend toward the head of the valley, look out for the atmospheric ruins of the roasting kilns that once dominated this landscape. Running here provides a unique perspective on how nature has reclaimed this Victorian industrial hub, transforming it into one of the most serene and visually striking locations for trail running in the United Kingdom.
