If you're looking to test your lungs and legs, this 4.8km loop through Kilburn High and Low offers a punchy challenge with a rewarding forest canopy. Starting from the convenient local car park, you'll immediately dive into an immersive woody run that centers on the ascent of Hood Hill. Rated as a level 3 hilly course, the terrain is entirely unpaved, trading tarmac for natural trails and soft woodland floor. The real test is "the steep way" up the hill, a climb that will get your heart rate soaring, followed by a much longer, more gradual descent that allows you to open up your stride and find a rhythmic flow back to the start.
Kilburn High and Low, situated within the iconic North York Moors National Park near the edge of the Hambleton Hills, is steeped in North Yorkshire history. As you navigate the loop, you are running through territory famously overlooked by the Kilburn White Horse, the most northerly turf-cut figure in England. The dense woodland surrounding Hood Hill was historically part of the vast royal hunting forests, and today it serves as a serene sanctuary for local wildlife. Runners here often find the thick greenery provides a cooling microclimate, making it a perfect spot for hill repeats or a vigorous trail session even on warmer British afternoons.
