For runners seeking a true fell-running experience in the Yorkshire Dales, this 11km circuit from Kettlewell offers a formidable challenge. The route begins with a sustained, steep ascent of Great Whernside, climbing nearly 500 meters over technical, grassy, and peaty terrain. Once you summit—standing at 704 meters above sea level—you'll be rewarded with panoramic views before beginning a more gradual descent via Cam Head. The final stretch back into the village becomes quite steep and demanding on the quads, making this an excellent "Short Local" (SL) category training run for those targeting mountain races. Since the route spends significant time above the 500m contour line, be prepared for soft underfoot conditions and rapidly shifting weather common to the high Dales.
Kettlewell, nestled in Wharfedale, is one of the most iconic villages in the Yorkshire Dales National Park and has a rich history as an old lead-mining hub and a vital stop on the packhorse routes through the Pennines. Great Whernside itself lacks the commercial crowds of its neighbor, Whernside (the highest of the Three Peaks), offering runners a more rugged and solitary experience on the ridge. After finishing your descent, locals recommend refuelling at one of the village's traditional pubs; the area is famous for its warm hospitality and the annual Scarecrow Festival. Running here feels like stepping into the heart of Northern England’s limestone country, where the stone walls and emerald valleys provide a stunning backdrop to every grueling mile.
