Tackle the wilder side of the Yorkshire Dales with this 9.9km loop across Embsay Moor. Starting from the reservoir car park, this route is a true fell runner's playground, characterized by its "SL" (Short Local) category-style challenge. Expect a mixed bag of terrain including soft grass, thick bracken, and springy heather. With 277m of vertical gain and a hilly rating of 4, your legs will certainly feel the burn. While the northern section offers a clearer path, much of the route relies on faint tracks that demand keen navigation. It is famously heavy going in wet conditions, turning the moor into a technical test of strength and balance where trail shoes with aggressive lugs are non-negotiable.
Embsay Moor sits on the southern fringe of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, providing a dramatic backdrop of gritstone crags and expansive peatlands. The area is steeped in industrial and agricultural history; as you crest the ridges, you’ll see the silhouettes of Rylstone Cross and the distant Barden Moor. These uplands have been grazed by sheep for centuries, and the "faint paths" you'll follow are often the result of ancient packhorse routes or local shepherds' tracks. Running here offers a profound sense of solitude, located just a stone's throw from the charming village of Embsay—home to the famous Embsay & Bolton Abbey Steam Railway—making it a perfect blend of rugged wilderness and traditional Yorkshire heritage.
