This 6.8km loop offers a quintessential North Yorkshire running experience, blending the smooth accessibility of the Bilton Greenway with the rugged, technical charm of Nidd Gorge. Starting from the Bilton Lane car park, you’ll enjoy a gentle warm-up on paved surfaces before diving into the ancient woodland. The middle section follows the banks of the River Nidd, where the terrain shifts to natural trails that can become muddy and slick after a classic British rain shower. With a modest 44m of ascent, the climb is gradual, making it an excellent choice for runners looking to improve their hill strength without the intimidation of steep fells.
Harrogate is world-renowned for its spa heritage, but local runners know that the real magic lies just a few miles from the town centre in the Nidd Gorge. This deep ravine was carved out during the last Ice Age and is now managed by the Woodland Trust, providing a sanctuary for roe deer, kingfishers, and herons. As you transition from the greenway back to the tarmac of Bilton Lane for a fast finish, you're running through land that has remained largely unchanged for centuries. Post-run, you’re only a short distance from the famous Betty's Tea Rooms, though many locals prefer a quicker refueling stop at the nearby cafes in the Bilton suburb.
