Tackle the rugged beauty of the North York Moors on this 14.1km circuit that demands respect and delivers breathtaking rewards. Starting from the quiet village of Chop Gate, runners face a significant ascent of 414m as they climb toward the high plateaus of Cold Moor and Urra Moor. The terrain is a classic moorland mix; expect technical, heather-lined singletrack and substantial elevation gain that tests your climbing legs. Reaching heights of over 500m, this "SL" (Short Long) category fell route offers punishing but exhilarating climbs, culminating in expansive views that stretch across the Cleveland Hills and toward the iconic Roseberry Topping in the distance.
The area around Urra Moor is steeped in history and natural prominence, serving as the highest point in the North York Moors National Park. As you navigate the ridgelines, you are running through a landscape dotted with Bronze Age burial mounds and ancient boundary stones, including the famous Face Stone. This part of Hambleton is notorious for its rapidly shifting microclimate; a sunny start in the valley can quickly turn into a misty, high-altitude challenge on the moor tops. Locals know that the "Round Hill" summit on Urra Moor provides some of the best panoramic views in Northern England, making the steep lung-buster of a climb well worth the effort for any seasoned trail runner.
