The Settle Loop Clockwise is a quintessential Yorkshire Dales running experience, offering a rigorous 15.4km circuit that perfectly balances lung-busting climbs with exhilarating descents. Starting from the charming market town of Settle, runners will navigate a mix of rugged bridleways, limestone tracks, and soft grassy footpaths with approximately 408m of vertical gain. This Category SL (Short/Long) fell-style route features several sections above the 500m contour line, meaning you’ll be treated to sweeping, unobstructed views of the Ribble Valley and the iconic limestone scars. While roughly 5km of the route is paved as you exit and return to the town, the heart of the run is a true upland adventure where the terrain remains largely "runnable" but requires a keen eye for footing on the rocky outcrops.
Steeped in geological and industrial history, the area surrounding Settle is famous for its dramatic karst landscape, specifically the Great Scar Limestone. As you traverse the loop, you are running through a landscape shaped by both nature and human hand; the famous dry-stone walls that line your path are staples of Craven’s agricultural heritage, many dating back centuries. The route passes near the legendary Victoria Cave, where remains of prehistoric animals and Roman artifacts were discovered. Because this run takes you into the exposed high fells of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, local runners know that the weather can shift from bright sunshine to thick mist in minutes—always carry a waterproof layer and respect the wild, mercurial nature of the Dales.
