Prepare for a classic Yorkshire Dales challenge as you tackle the ascent of Ingleborough, one of the famous "Big Three" peaks. Starting from Clapham, this 9.3km out-and-back route follows Fell Lane, transitioning from a steady climb into a rugged, steep ascent that gains 545m of elevation. The terrain is entirely unpaved, featuring rocky limestone paths and grassy fell sections that demand focus and strong ankles. Reaching the vast, wind-swept summit plateau rewards runners with unparalleled 360-degree views of the Pen-y-ghent and Whernside massifs, making the intense "Hilly: 5" rating feel well worth the effort on the swift, technical descent back to the village.
Steeped in ancient history, Ingleborough is more than just a peak; it was once the site of one of the highest Iron Age hillforts in Britain, the remnants of which are still visible near the summit cairn. As you run through the Craven district, you’ll pass through a landscape shaped by millennia of glacial activity and limestone erosion, passing near the famous Gaping Gill—one of the UK's most impressive cave systems. The local weather in the Dales is notoriously fickle; what begins as a mild run in the valley can quickly turn into a misty, high-altitude expedition above 500m, so always carry a waterproof layer and respect the mountain's shifting moods.
