This 8.5km loop offers an authentic taste of the Yorkshire Dales, characterized by a challenging 311m ascent that kicks off shortly after leaving the village. Runners will trade tarmac for grassy fells as they tackle an 8% average gradient, climbing steadily toward the 500m contour line. The effort is rewarded with sweeping, panoramic views across Richmondshire before a fast, technical descent on the firmer surfaces of Cam Road. Given the route's elevation and exposure, expect a mix of rugged trail and surfaced tracks—a perfect testing ground for those looking to build hill strength and endurance on varied terrain.
Steeped in Roman and agricultural history, Cam Road follows the line of an ancient Roman way that once connected the forts of the north. This area of the Dales is defined by its dramatic limestone scars and dry-stone walls, which have carved the landscape for centuries. As you traverse these high-altitude tracks, you are running through a living museum of rural heritage; however, the high moorland is notorious for its rapidly shifting microclimate. Local runners always advise carrying a windproof layer, as a sunny start in the valley can quickly turn into a misty, bracing challenge once you reach the top of the ridge.
