This 10.4km loop offers a fantastic blend of technical trail and paved sections, making it a favorite for Somerset runners seeking a varied training ground. Starting from West Hill, you’ll immediately tackle a steady climb up Portishead Down; with a total ascent of 140m, this route provides a moderate challenge that rewards you with sweeping views across the Bristol Channel. The terrain transitions from woodland paths and grassy ridges to smooth coastal roads, providing a rhythmic "stop-start" flow that tests both your climbing lungs and your downhill speed as you loop through the quiet village of Weston in Gordano and back toward the shoreline.
Portishead’s history is deeply rooted in its maritime heritage, originally serving as a vital port for the region’s fishing and trade industries. As you run along the coast, you’ll notice the stark beauty of the Severn Estuary, famous for having one of the highest tidal ranges in the world. The area of Portishead Down is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), home to rare limestone grassland and ancient woodlands. Local runners often cite the "Gordano Valley" stretch as a peaceful escape where the sounds of the coastal winds give way to the calm of the English countryside, offering a unique dual-landscape experience in a single workout.
