This 7.0km circuit offers a quintessential North Somerset running experience, blending tranquil riverside paths with a rewarding technical challenge. Starting from the Millennium Green in Congresbury, the initial stretch allows you to find your rhythm along the flat, grassy banks of the River Yeo. The peace is short-lived, however, as the route transitions into a "stiff" ascent through the atmospheric canopy of Ball Wood. With 137m of total climbing, this hilly section will test your glutes and lungs before rewarding you with a fast, technical descent that invites you to open up your stride on the way back into the village. Approximately 20% of the course is paved, making high-traction trail shoes highly recommended, especially after a typical English rain shower when the woodland trails can become slick.
Congresbury itself is steeped in West Country history, and running through this landscape feels like a journey through time. The River Yeo has long been the lifeblood of the valley, once powering local mills and serving as an ancient boundary. Ball Wood is an ancient broadleaf woodland, and if you time your run during the spring, you’ll be treated to a spectacular carpet of bluebells and wild garlic. The Millennium Green where you begin and end is a cherished community space, reclaimed from former railway land, serving as a gateway to the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Keep an eye out for local kingfishers along the riverbanks or buzzards circling above the woodland ridges during your effort.
